S/S 2012 Short Reviews #1

Alexander McQueen - S/S 2012

“It’s an exploration of ideals of beauty at their most extreme. We go to such lengths to adorn ourselves that we almost become our clothes or are taken over by them.” - Sarah Burton

Sarah Burton has worked her magic once again - and in more ways than one. For spring/summer 2012 Burton pulls inspiration from mythology, featuring a range of pieces from flirty, magical mini dresses to tough cutout bodysuits; and at the same time manages to once again convey Alexander McQueen’s vision. Burton broke the mold with this collection because the pieces are so close to couture. While watching the show I felt those defining lines fade: fashion is art but we often forget that; Burton doesn’t. She breaks the rules, creates what she feels rather than what she is expected to present. That said, I still feel the collection is wearable; if you’re career and/or social life give you opportunities to wear such lavish (starting at just $17,000) pieces.

Key trends: Dress suit, knee length, mullet dress, gladiator platforms, dramatic ruffles, cupped breasts.

Colour trends: gold+white, coral, lavender+white, black +beige, coral +white, beige.

Favourite details: Braided collars, translucent sheen, cutout details, lace veils, beading.

  2. while i find these pieces interesting to look at, knowing what i do about mcqueen's actual collections, i cannot help but find these a bit contrived and, just, well, not as good.

    1. I feel like they're a little less dramatic than his previous collections. They are a bit more light, a bit more feminine, a bit more light. I think its a refreshing change but of course NOBODY could every replace Lee.
